Desert trek MOROCCO - eCO FRIENDLY TOUR

An 8-day/7-night desert trek in Morocco is a true experience that takes you to the wild Erg Chigaga dunes to Challenge yourself during your vacation. Travel in peace with locals and experience the fauna and flora of the Sahara. Our desert trekking trip starts from Marrakech and heads to south East Morocco, Just before Mhamid EL Ghizlan you will start this unique adventure and challenging trip to the Sahara.

Venture into the wild of the desert accompanied by camels like an old caravan. Walk in different terrains of rocky Reg and different Ergs. Travel green in the Sahara of Morocco and explore the magical deserts with local guides.

For each day hike on this arid terrain, you carry just a day pack, we create this trip to be an informative experience as well as a walk through the unique terrain, as we seek to share our knowledge of the Sahara and provide all you need to have an active yet comfortable holiday in Morocco.

Desert trek Morocco itinerary:

Day 1: Marrakech arrival

Welcome to Morocco!

Our guide will pick you up at Menara airport.

Overnight in a Riad

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Meals included: none
  • Accommodation: Authentic Riad in Marrakech
  • Optional activity: Hammam experience, guided tour of the Medina

Day 2: Travel from Marrakech  to Ouarzazate – Zagora – Faija

Our Desert trek Morocco trip will start at 8 am, we leave Marrakech, driving through the spectacular Tizi n’ Tichka Pass (2260m above sea level). This beautiful mountain road has unforgettable scenery and is the highest road in the country.  Continue through the towns of Ouarzazate and Zagora, enjoying the palm groves and local villages. Our direction changes just before the famous sign “52 Days to Timbuktu” and we continue along the plateau of Faija.

Day 3: Camel trek from Faija to Oum Laachar – Pass –  Overnight at Oued Mhasser desert

loading the camels and starting our trek by crossing the pass of Oum Laachar. We continue along a dry river and pass a hidden Oasis between the mountains. Continue with short climbs and descents till we reach our camp on the riverbank of Oued Mhasser.

Day 4: camel trek from Oued Mhasser to Chegaga camping in the desert 

Walking along the river of Oued Mhasser and crossing a pebbly desert. If it’s clear, we can begin to see the great dunes of Chegaga, which appear more impressive the closer we get. We join our team in camp on a plateau and enjoy an amazing sunset over the dunes. As the stars come out, we relax in traditional tents and have a tasty meal around the campfire.

Day 5: Desert trek from Dunes of Chegaga to Dunes of Bougarne/ admire the real Sahara landscape

Wake up early to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise on the dunes before breakfast. We continue our trek Crossing a dry lake and rocky desert to reach Oued Laatach (‘river of thirst) and along the way see nomad camps with their flock of goats. We cross another rocky desert to reach our camp near the dunes of Bougarne. These dunes are smaller than those of Chegaga, but still, provide panoramic views across the landscape as we watch the sunset.

Day 6: desert trek from the Dunes of Bougarne to Oued Naam

Our desert trek today starts across a rocky desert plateau, which gives a mineral edge to the landscape. After a long walk, we arrive at our camp next to Oued Naam, with its famous well. We can have a wash but must be conscious of this fragile resource.

Day 7: walk from Oued Naam to Mhamid – Travel by car to Marrakech

We depart very early because we have a long trip back to Marrakech. We trek across a plateau of small dunes and then a forest of Tamaris. Around noon, we arrive in the village of Mhamid village, the last village before the vast Sahara. We say goodbye to our team of camel drivers and drive back to  Marrakech, passing through Zagora and Ouarzazate, We overnight in Marrakech before full departure the following day.

Day 8: Return flight

Transfer to the Marrakech airport for your return flight according to the schedule.
